| Prior to April 12, 1861, Fort Sumter stood three stories high and protected Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. Confederate gunners opened fire on the fort early that morning; during the next four years, incessant artillery fire reduced Fort Sumter to ruins, leaving only the one-story walls now protected by Fort Sumter National Monument. | [iStockPhoto.com] |
