Fort Sumter ruins



Prior to April 12, 1861, Fort Sumter stood three stories high and protected Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. Confederate gunners opened fire on the fort early that morning; during the next four years, incessant artillery fire reduced Fort Sumter to ruins, leaving only the one-story walls now protected by Fort Sumter National Monument.
