The American Civil War Erupts: The Attack on Fort Sumter
FEATURE STORY April 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the Confederate shelling of Fort Sumter, located on an island in Charleston Harbor and commanded by Union major Robert Anderson. The shots fired here during April 12–13, 1861, represent the first of the Civil War—the nation's bloodiest conflict. A number of special events and exhibits have been planned to commemorate the sesquicentennial of this pivotal moment in American history.
