In this handwritten letter dated March 26, 1984 from César Chávez to Susan Samuels Drake, Chávez's former personal secretary, Chávez expresses his desire to reach out to former union members through the use of a organizational newsletter. Pivotal to understanding this Chávez's appeal is the fact that the UFW found itself in a dreadful state of disarray since the 1970s. At the time of this letter, the key union leaders had all been purged from the union due to various disagreements over leadership and strategy. Given this weakened state, it is not surprising that Chávez makes such a case to Drake who was also purged from the union in 1973.
