John Lewis, a student at American Baptist Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee, talks with James Zwerg, who was brutally beaten In Montgomery, Alabama, on May 20, 1961. Both are Freedom Riders, students and activists who protested racial segregation in interstate bus terminals and on buses by testing to see if those facilities were still segregated despite a 1960 Supreme Court ruling. Many Freedom Riders were the victims of violence.
