| Archbishop Makarios III headed the Cypriot Orthodox Church from 1950 to 1977. Although he sought to unite Cyprus with Greece, the proposed partitioning of the island between the Greek and Turkish communities prompted him to sign an agreement that made Cyprus an independent nation in 1959. Makarios was president of Cyprus from 1959 to 1977. |
