
| The hard-line, precommunist leader of China and later long-time ruler of the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan), Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek) and his Nationalist Party supporters were forced to flee the mainland for Taiwan in 1949 after the victory of Mao Zedong and his communist forces. Jiang ruled Taiwan until his death in 1975. |
