Jan Christian Smuts



Afrikaner soldier and statesman Jan Smuts was instrumental in establishing the independence of South Africa, helping to form the Union of South Africa in the years 1908 to 1910. He was prime minister from 1919 to 1924 and from 1939 to 1948.
