U.S. Marines on Peleliu Island



Two U.S. Marines rest during the Battle of Peleliu on 14 July 1944. The Americans' attack on Peleliu Island started out as a routine fight to capture an airstrip in the western Pacific; however, the tenacity of the Japanese cost the Americans about 9,600 lives before they were victorious.
