| Japan's Nagumo Chuichi launched the air raid on Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War II. He also enjoyed several other successes before being defeated at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Thereafter, he was used by the Japanese high command as a scapegoat for Japanese defeats during the war and ultimately took his own life. |
