Troops arrive for the battle for Marshall Islands



American troops arrive in a Coast Guard-manned landing craft at Carlos Island in the Marshall Islands in February 1944. After removing the populations of two of the islands in the chain, the United States used the territories as official nuclear bomb testing sites, leaving Bikini Island so contaminated that it could not be inhabited.
