Flag raising on Iwo Jima

In this award-winning photograph, which served as the model for the Marine Corps War Memorial, U.S. troops raise the American flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. Strategically, the capture of the small island almost a month later was crucial to the United States because it was an ideal site from which to bomb Japan.
