United States attacks Yellow Beach in the Gilbert Islands



The 165th Infantry assault wave attacks Yellow Beach on Butaritari Island of the Makin Atoll in the Gilbert Islands on 20 November 1943. The Gilbert Islands were the first step in the U.S. Navy's leap frog plan to approach the Japanese home islands by occupying one group of islands in order to support the attack of the next.
