Barrage balloons during World War II

U.S. Marine Corps barrage balloons at Parris Island, South Carolina, in May 1942. Such balloons were intended to catch low-flying enemy aircraft in the cables that held the balloons to the ground. This strategy proved most effective against the V-1 "buzz bomb," the unmanned guided missile designed by the Luftwaffe.
